Uncountable people fall into the deep pit of sadness. They have broken hearts. The world appears gloomy to them. They start marching towards depression. They lose interest in the activities which were once important to them. It’s difficult for them to find purpose in their lives. This signals that they’ve put their reliance and expectations in something that is bound to perish. Putting your full weight on a weak or broken chair guarantees your fall.
The problem is never with the chair, but with you!
We human beings have a very short vision. We don’t invest in long-term gains. Our expectations rest in the weak and temporary creations like one’s job, money, status, children, relationship, friendship etc. These are not evil things, but thinking about them all day long and letting them control our minds and putting overly high expectations in them ultimately lead us to the darkness of despair. Disappointment and hopelessness overtake us. They leave our hearts scarred.
The ultimate cure for a heart wounded with such expectations lies in confiding in Allah (swt).
”ALL THE PRAISES AND THANKS BE TO ALLAH, WHO HAS REMOVED FROM US (ALL) GRIEF”
Al-Qur’an [35: 34]
When we seek from Our Master, we are sure of the returns. When our expectations are in the right direction, disappointment and sadness cannot inflict us. Referring to the believers, it is said, ”…UPON SUCH SHALL COME NO FEAR, NOR SHALL THEY GRIEVE” [2: 38] Unlike material things, when Allah (swt) is the Provider, expectations won’t hurt us.
“AND PUT YOUR TRUST IN THE EVER-LIVING ONE WHO DIES NOT” [25: 58]
